Dr. San Oei, an orthopedic surgeon, was quite frustrated when he had to assist surgery during his surgical training. He still remembers the experience of battling to keep the wound open with the "antique" instruments. An open gallbladder operation usually lasts more than 45 minutes and assisting the surgeon during the operation involves a lot of instrument use. San Oei noticed that the shape of the handles make the instruments difficult to grip - the handles have to be held in different positions and they don’t lie comfortably in the hand. This leads to chafing and literally puts too much pressure on the hand that holds the instrument. After completing his training, San Oei set to work on improving the design of the handles. He collaborated with the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands to develop and patent a new handle for manual instruments. The handles were tested in operating theatres and given the thumbs up by users. Finally, an ergonomic handle to meet today's requirements!
Almost any retractor or surgical instrument intended for hand-held use can be fitted with a Versamodis handle on request. We have also selected the 50 most commonly used surgical instruments and fitted them with the new ergonomic handle. These handles come in a diameter of 25 or 20 millimeters (depending on the type of instrument) and, like traditional instruments, are made of stainless steel. The instruments also have the same length as their traditional counterparts and can be handled, cleaned, sterilized, and stored in the same way.
